Renegades Youth wins Panorama

BP Renegades Youth Steel Orchestra halted St Augustine
Secondary Comprehensive School’s run for a fourth
consecutive title by topping the under 21 category of
the national Junior Panorama championship yesterday.
The Renegades Youth orchestra, spared no punches as the
players put down a performance that could have even
stood up to its adult parent band, bp Renegades.
Dressed in all white, with matching fedoras, the
Renegades Youth orchestra executed a well choreographed
and entertaining rendition of De Fosto’s “Puncernelly”,
arranged by Shelton Besson, which earned them 450 points.
The young pannists churned up a musical storm that had
the audience cheering long after the end of their
performance.
Their closest rival was the San Fernando based Golden
Hands which copped second place with 431 points. They
played Destra Garcia’s “Hooked”.
St Augustine Secondary Compre-hensive, which dominated
this category for the past three years, had to settle
for third place as they earned 407.5 points for their
delivery of “Pressure” sung by Derek Seales and arranged
by Cheo Cato.
Woodbrook Government Secon-dary, the third place winner
of the 2007 under 21 category, slipped to fourth place.
St Margaret’s Boys’ Anglican Primary School both won and
lost in the competition yesterday. The band which they
fielded for the under 13 category won, but its senior
group which bagged the under 16 title last year was
dethroned.
St Margaret’s under-13 champions, which received 434
points, booted last’s category winner Diego Martin Boys’
RC down to fourth place (355 points).
The under-13 band performed the late Andre Tanker’s song
“Ben Lion”, which was arranged by Shenelle Abraham and
Kendall Williams, and dominated the small field of four
competitors. It beat second place winner Tamana Primary
Steelpan Workshop by 26 points. This band played Lord
Kitchener’s “Toco Band”.
CASAETAL Steel Orchestra, who performed “Music in meh
blood” by Anslem Douglas, slipped to third spot, after
placing second last year.
In the under-16 category, St Margaret’s placed third, 22
points behind the victorious BATCE Steel (Bishop’s
Anstey/Trinity College East which is based in Trincity)
who gave an explosive performance of “Thunder Coming”,
sung by Chucky, and arranged by Sean Lewis, K Killien
and Lennox Salvary.
Trinity College, out of Maraval, came in second with
their rendition of “This Feeling Nice” by Denyse Plummer
which earned them 413 points.
Minister of Education Esther Le Gendre described the
competition as an amazing display of youth talent and
stressed on the importance of music in the lives of
young people.
This year’s competition paid tribute to Cary Codrington,
who has been on the “pan” scene since 1972. Codrington
was honoured for his contribution to Junior Panorama and
the development of young people. Twenty one bands took
part in the three-category competition.
